Introduction
P – Poly
C – Cystic
O – Ovary
D – Diseases / Syndrome
PCOD is very common in infertile women prevalent in young reproductive period. The word syndrome is used to describe the PCOD because, it is a complex
manifestation involving many factors and organs, such as –
Organs involved:
Causes
No particular cause identified.
May be hereditary.
Improper diet and life style, over eating, eating before previous food digestion, etc.,
Pathology
There 2 types of pathology:
1. Due to Ama in the Ovaries
2. Due to Ama in the body
Due to Ama in the Ovaries
Due to above causative factors, Ama formation takes place in the body. Ama starts circulating in the body, it finds the weak point and settle over there. In this situation ama finds place to settle in ovaries (may be one ovary or both). This leads to enlargement of the ovaries, 2 to 5 times the actual size. Ovary which is normally oval in shape, will turn to round shape.
Note: Pitta -Hormones
Actual physiology of ovulation is, Pituitary gland secrets the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), to ovary. Maturity of ovum takes place in Graafian follicle which is present in the ovary and then matured ovum will be released from the ovary.
When FSH (Pitta) comes to ovary – Ama which is settled in the ovary all ready, will reduce the FSH (Pitta). Due to less FSH (Pitta), ovum maturity does not take place in Graafian follicle. Resulting in no ovulation (Anovulation) resulting in infertility OR immature release of ovum if seen, resulting in miscarriage
Due to Ama in the body
Ama in the pelvic region obstructs the vata channels (main place of vata is large intestine). Leading to accumulation of kapha and pitta, as well as vata in the body. Resulting in aggravation of all the three doshas in the body. These doshas in turn vitiates the dhatus as well as up-dhatus.
Ama which is circulating in the body, will reduce the agni (pitta) present in the dhatus (dhatvagni). Resulting in improper formation of the dhatus OR only one dhatu (meda) will be nourished more and further dhatus are not nourished. This results in obesity and obesity relating diseases.
