According to Ayurveda, dysmenorrhea means Kashtaartava. Mainly Vata dosha is involved, as well as pitta dosha is involved in very less extant.
Causative factors are:
Vata prakruti individual:

Pitta prakruti individual:
Pitta aggravation aahara/vihara – like papaya, green chillies, capsicum …..

Samprapti:
Ayurveda tells us that, main place of Vata is large intestine and its function is to remove the products out of the body like, stools, urine, foetus, bleeding from vagina, etc.,
Doshas present during menstrual period is mainly Vata, but to some extant Pitta is predominant during this period. When the individual consumes the Vata aggravating factors, Vata starts accumulating in the lower abdomen. As Vata`s main character is producing pain. Therefore pain in the lower abdomen and low back is seen.
Due to the pitta aggravation, we can observe the acne, burning micturition, in some women`s little more bleeding when compared to normal individual.
This phenomena is known as dysmenorrhea.
Symptoms of dysmenorrhea:

Due to pitta: Acne, rashes on the skin, burning micturition and in some little more bleeding is seen.
